Growing up in a farming area of central Illinois, Greg West always knew he wanted a job that would keep him outside. An athletic scholarship brought him South to Auburn University, and it was then he discovered forestry. “I actually started out in biology, but I felt that would keep me in a lab too much,” he said. “It was an easy transition to forestry, and I’m so glad I did it.”

Since graduating from Auburn in the early 1970s, West has worked in forestry in some form or another. He worked for a private estate, Georgia-Pacific, and in a variety of procurement roles. For the last 30 years, he’s owned and operated West Forestlands, where he helps clients in west Alabama and even east Mississippi with their forestry needs, from cruising timber and locating property lines to cutting logs. He also spends much of his time performing chainsaw demonstrations for various groups as he is a chainsaw operator trainer for the U.S. Forest Service. “There’s not many of us located east of the Rockies,” he said. “Forestry has been good to me and has allowed me to meet a lot of great people. I really enjoy it.”
