PROFILE
Pat Smith was influenced in his love for
forestry at a rather early age: while in Boy
Scouts, his scoutmaster happened to be a
consulting forester. “He hired me to help him
mark timber, and I fell in love with the work,”
Smith explained. “I really enjoyed the diversity
of work and the opportunity to improve timber
stands and wildlife habitat.”
That love led Smith to pursue a master’s degree
in forestry from Auburn University. At that
time, in the late 1990s, GIS and digital mapping
were beginning to take off in the industry.
Quite a bit of Smith’s studies at Auburn were
focused in on that, so he soon began offering
his services while still in school. “I did
forestry mapping services for a variety of
clients, including landowners, real estate
investors and other foresters, as well as
subcontract forestry work,” he said.
Upon receiving his registered foresters’ license
in 2000, Smith officially began Sandy Creek
Forestry in Demopolis. Though limiting his
services to Sumter, Marengo, Hale and Green
counties, Smith offers a range of forest
management services, including wildlife habitat
development and property management. “I enjoy
the opportunity to work outside and on projects
where I can see the fruits of my labor on the
landscape,” he added.
