PROFILE

For Earl Smith, forestry is practically in his blood. He was raised on a farm in east-central Alabama, where his dad would cut timber off the property, and during the summers he sometimes worked for Kimberly Clark. “I have always enjoyed forestry, and knew early on that it was a good fit for me.”

After earning a forest management degree from Auburn University, Smith went right to work in the industry full time, first joining Kimberly Clark as a procurement forester and then going to work for the Alabama Forestry Commission, where he helped land owners across the state for more than 20 years.

In 2002, Smith retired from the state and started A-1 Forestry Service & Appraisal, choosing to serve in his home of Clay County and its surrounding counties. He continues to provide forest management services for landowners, managing timber sales, giving forest recommendations, and providing forest evaluations and appraisals. “We offer essentially anything involved in forestry other than prescribed burning,” Smith said. “One thing I enjoy about it is that I get to work with many of the same landowners I worked with while at the state. Many of them I’ve known practically my whole life, and I enjoy building those relationships with my customers.”
