PROFILE

For Doug Smith, finance had long been his family’s business—his mother, father, and brother are all accountants—but Smith decided to forge a different path in forestry. After receiving a forest management degree from Auburn University, Smith set out on that plan, working in a number of roles. He first joined a small family sawmill business, buying timber and running logging operations. Then after a brief sting outside of the industry, Smith joined the Alabama Forestry Commission, where he spent 15 years. He then went to work with the Blount County Emergency Management office, where he planned to work part time while also starting a part-time consulting business. “But the consulting work grew bigger than I anticipated,” Smith added.

That’s when he officially went full-time with his new company, Oak Ridge Forestry. His focus from the start was to work with smaller landowners that perhaps were deemed too small for other consultants. “I enjoy working with the landowners, seeing them complete their projects and have pride in what they have accomplished for not only themselves, but also for future generations of their families,” Smith said. “I’m proud to serve landowners in whatever capacity I can.”
