PROFILE

Joe Rigsby of Rigsby Investment Company, Inc., has seen a lot of forestland over the course of his 55-year career. He remembers doing timber cruises by helicopter in Honduras and in an early October snowfall in Michigan. He acknowledged that he is old enough to retire, but has no plans to do so. “I still get up and drive my pickup truck down dirt roads every day and enjoy being out in the woods.”

Rigsby left a vice president position at Resource Management Service, Inc. in 1983 to strike out on his own after 15 years with the company. Early on, he did a lot of appraisals for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Forest Service all over the Southeast. He is a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser in Alabama, and is a Registered Forester and Real Estate Broker. However, he worked hard to build up a practice that lets him do more of what he likes best – forest management.

In addition to preserving his independence, working solo assures that all of his clients get personal attention. A couple of years ago, Rigsby moved his business from Montgomery to his hometown of Georgiana where he built a cabin, office, and other outbuildings, all from lumber cut from the land he is living on. He says he just likes being out in the woods.
