Kenneth Real knows that land management isn’t for everybody. “It takes a special kind of person to want to be out in the heat, snakes and ticks,” he said. “It’s not a job for just anybody.”
But Real discovered pretty early on in his career that it was probably meant for him. After working in the industry several years at a sawmill, he got the itch to go out on his own and start his own timberland management company, Realwood, Inc. “I’ve never once regretted that decision,” he said. “It is tough sometimes, and it is demanding. But to me, it’s a great profession.”

Located in Detroit, Alabama, Real works all over northwest Alabama, northeast Mississippi and into Tennessee. He’s even had clients call him from as far away as California, Connecticut and Great Britain. “They want to invest in timberland, and while I’m not a realtor, I was able to help them find land and then advise them through the purchasing process,” he explained. “Now I manage it for them.”

In addition to helping clients find and purchase timberland, he also provides other management options like basic timberland management, reforestation and boundary maintenance. He manages the property for each and every client just like he does his own 400-acre family land, which is where he spends his downtime with his family.
