PROFILE

For 30-plus years, Charles Murphy has assisted clients all over Alabama through his company, Tombigbee Forestry Services. Based in Butler, he uses his decades of experience to advise them on everything from site prep to timber sales. It’s not only what he’s done since graduating from Auburn University in 1978, but what he’s done his whole life. “I grew up in the woods,” he said. “Being from Bibb County, you either worked on the farms, in the lumber mills, or in the woods.” Summer jobs working in the Talladega National Forest with the U.S. Forest Service and various other part-time jobs with local woodland companies influenced the decision to pursue a forestry career. “I’ve spent my life in the trees in one way or another,” he added.

Having also grown up with grandparents who owned farm and timberland properties further instilled his appreciation of the outdoors. Owning a property of his own was always a goal, and it’s one he achieved in the late 1990s when he purchased a 600-acre property in Pushmataha, a community in northwestern Choctaw County. Featuring creeks, old growth hardwoods, pine ridges and around 200 acres of fertile bottomland, the property has “everything a country boy needs,” he added. And when not working for his clients, that’s where he can be found. “My greatest joy in life has been the countless days spent there with my grandson, Eli.”
