PROFILE:

J.J. McCool always enjoyed nature. From the time he was a young boy, spending time in the woods fishing, hunting or simply exploring was his passion. He dreamt of having a career that would let him enjoy his love for all things wild, just like his hero, Marlin Perkins, host of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. “As a kid I watched him and told everyone I was going to do that when I grew up,” McCool explained. “I even tried to call him once when I was a kid to tell him I would like the job when he retired.”

After receiving degrees in forestry and wildlife biology from Mississippi State and a period working for a forestry consulting firm, McCool started his own company, Wildlife Solutions, Inc., which actually offers two divisions: one that focuses on forestry and wetland restoration and management and another that helps with nuisance animal control. With a niche in wetland restoration, McCool has worked on a number of high profile projects, including the Lightning Point project in Bayou La Batre, Bayou Sauvage and Bayou Segnette projects for the Corp of Engineers in Louisiana and the Marsh Island Restoration Project near Dauphin Island. He recently completed a project in Horseshoe Beach, Florida, and he’s still busy working on multiple other projects around Alabama for the National Estuary Program. “I work hard, but I love what I do,” McCool said. “I like the people and seeing the results of my work.”
