PROFILE

DJ Landrum owns Landco Forestry in Chunchula, a small town in Mobile County. Landrum said that Landco Forestry focuses on providing forest services like burning, mechanical and chemical site prep, and controlling invasive plant species like cogongrass, a big issue in the southwestern part of the state. He and his two full-time employees are on the ground, whether it’s dozer work or backpack spraying, every day, and his capacity to offer these services himself is one of the things that helped him find his niche with clients.

Landrum also works with consultants who focus more on advising landowners and aren’t able to provide services like prescribed fire or road building themselves. “If I have client who needs something, we just kind of find a way to make it happen and get it done,” he said. As a kid, he planted trees on his family’s land, and still can’t see himself doing anything different. “It’s pretty rewarding when you transform a piece of property and your client is in disbelief at how fire or a timber harvest can transform their property.” Landrum said the thing he always wants his clients to know is that there is more than one way to reach their objectives. “Whether they have a large or small piece of property, they don’t have to manage it in just one way. I just like to let them know they have options.”
