PROFILE

Brian Agnew fell in love with the forestry business when he was still a young boy. “I remember watching TV and a commercial for Weyerhaeuser came on, showing a forester planting trees,” he said. “I loved backpacking and hiking in the woods and knew then that forestry was something I wanted to do. I imagined living in a cabin in the woods.”

Agnew achieved that goal. He graduated from Auburn University with a degree in forest management in 1978. While in college, he spent three summers in Montana, including one working with the U.S. Forest Service. In 1981, he became a Registered Forester. Currently, he is a self-employed forest consultant and has owned Southern Land Management, LLC, since 1998. He is also a licensed real-estate agent with Speaks Land Company.

Before owning his own company, Agnew worked for Union Camp (1978-1984), W. J. Sorrell Lumber and Pulpwood Co., Inc. (1985-1995) and Natural Resource Consulting (1995-1998).
Agnew has been a very active member of his profession and community. He has been a member of the Society of American Foresters since 1977, Union Springs City Council since 2008, the Alabama Farmers Federation, and Alabama Forestry Association. He has also served on many boards and committees including the Alabama Farmers Federation's State Forestry Committee, as Secretary-Treasurer for the Bullock County Farmers Federation, and as Secretary of the Society of American Foresters' Southeast Section in 2012. Agnew has also been a member of the Union Springs Planning Commission for 15 years. He and his wife Dianne have five boys. The family attends St. Pius X church in Union Springs.

When asked about what he liked to do, he laughed and answered, “I’m living the life I love but I like to sleep and play golf. Work wise, I’m a GP—general practitioner but I kind of specialize in mapping. Oh, and yeah, I’m really good at what I do.”
