Ban on Foreign Ownership of
Alabama Land in the Works
Micah Brown
is a staff attorney at the
National
Agricultural Law Center, the nation's leading source of agricultural
and food law research and information. A topic across the nation as of late
is the foreign ownership, particularly Chinese ownership, of U.S.
agricultural land. Unbeknown to many until lately, foreign investments into
U.S. agricultural land have increased significantly over the last decade. In
fact, according to the National Agricultural Law Center, since January 2022,
foreigners have an interest in more than 40 million acres of U.S.
agricultural land. Many within the Alabama legislature have been working on
a local level to change this in Alabama. Last year, Senator Tim Melson
introduced
Senate Bill 14 in an attempt to restrict foreign ownership, but the bill
failed to pass. This year, Representative Scott Stadthagen has introduced
HB379
in an effort to prohibit Chinese ownership of property in Alabama, and just
last week HB379 cleared the House Urban and Rural Development Committee to
proceed. Micah joins us to provide insight into the topic, what citizens
should know, and the latest on legislative attempts to prohibit foreign
ownership.

New Online Resource for
Landowners
Becky Barlow
serves as the Assistant Director for Ag, Forestry, and Natural
Resource programs with the
Alabama Cooperative Extension System, as well as Associate Dean
for Extension within
Auburn University's
College of Agriculture. With her extensive background in the
industry, she knows the importance for landowners to have a forest inventory
taken of their property so that they can make the best, most informed
decisions possible. This is one of the many reasons behind the creation of
the Alabama Cooperative Extension's (ACE) new online resource,
Forest Inventory Basics for Family Forest Landowners. The e-book,
which was supported financially by the Bradley/Murphy Forestry and Natural
Resources Extension Trust, "provides the basics of forest measurements and
inventories, how and why they are taken, and how to interpret the results of
those measurements" through a variety of methods, from well-written
narratives to actual video tutorials. Becky, co-author of the e-book, joins
us to talk about what led to its creation and why it's a must-read for
landowners and consulting foresters alike.
