Gift Tax 101
Dr. Robert Tufts is
an Attorney and Professor Emeritus in the
School of Forestry and
Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University. Tax laws surrounding taxable
transfers are typically difficult to understand and frequently are changing
with each new administration. Believe it or not, taxes aren't always owed on
money or property given as gifts. Dr. Tufts will speak with us on the
details of the gift tax and transfers that are actually exempt from the gift
tax.

Financial Relief and the Hurricane Michael Block
Grant Program
Hunter Moncrief
is the Landowner Assistance Coordinator with the
Alabama
Forestry Commission. Numerous land owners were
significantly impacted in southeast Alabama by Hurricane Michael in October 2018 and the Lee County
tornadoes in March 2019. Financial relief is available to these land owners
via the Hurricane Michael Block Gran Program, which is administered by the
Alabama Forestry Commission and made possible through an agreement with the
USDA Farm Service Agency. The program was designed to provide $10 million in
financial relief to qualifying non-industrial private forest landowners.
Hunter will share information about who exactly is eligible for the relief
and how they can apply.

Critical Minerals in Alabama
Dane VanDervoort is
a Geologist with the
Geologic Investigations Program at the
Geological Survey of
Alabama. A somewhat new topic for the state of Alabama is graphite
mining. With a new
$80 million graphite plant coming to Alexander City and more focus being
put on mining for this natural resource, forest owners
in Alabama's graphite belt will want to learn all they can about graphite,
as well as the other 18 different critical minerals found in Alabama. Dane
will share information about what land owners need to do in order to
identify what critical minerals may be found on their properties.

The Truth About Wood Pellets
Larry Sullivan is the
Bioenergy and Biochemical Sector Sales Manager at
Forest2Market,
as well as a part-time Adjunct Professor at The Citadel. Recently, as more
European countries are trying to expand their energy portfolios to include
more bioenergy production with the use of wood pellets, major news outlets
have been going after the wood pellet industry with inaccurate reports of
how the industry is destroying forests and harming the
environment. These reports are loaded with false information. As Larry notes
in a recent
Forest2Market blog post, these pieces "do not provide a full-spectrum
view of the forest supply chain or the environmental benefits of sustainably
managed forest resources." To help quell the misinformation, Larry will talk
with us about the real benefits the wood pellet industry provides.
