Eminent Domain Issues Affecting Alabama Forest Owners

David F. Steele, Sr. is senior partner and founder at Steele Law, LLC, with a strong focus on property and probate law, and he is also a partner in the timber dealership and land management firm of Hines, Steele and Steele, Inc. He shared some thoughts on eminent domain and forest landowners in a recent presentation. We asked what situations forest landowners might face, and what they should know about their rights.

Overview and Outlook: Alabama's Forest Resources

Gary M. Faulkner has served as Forest Economic Development Specialist with the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) since 2018. Each year, the Alabama Forestry Commission produces the Forest Resource Report, which is a comprehensive forest resource analysis. The 2019 Report presents the most current Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA), conducted by the AFC inventory team, along with other indicators of resource levels and the forest industry. It presents a picture of the current landscape and conclusions about where current conditions and trends may point. Gary joins us to discuss a few key points of interest from the report for Alabama forest owners.

CORE Carbon: Carbon Offset Market for Private Landowners

Matt Smith is Vice President of Forest Operations at Finite Carbon. Several AFOA members have contacted us to ask about carbon offset programs becoming an option for smaller private forestland owners. Previously, the carbon offset market was only an option for large industrial tracts of land. Now, smaller acreage private landowners who manage "sustainably" can also participate, if they choose. Several companies have programs available, with varying requirements and benefits for the landowner. We asked Matt to talk to us about CORE Carbon, offered by Finite Carbon, and how their program works.
