Will Pine Timber Supply and Demand Ever Reach a
Balance?
Dr. Brooks Mendell
is president and CEO of Forisk Consulting, LLC,
which analyzes forest supplies, wood demand and timber pricing to develop
forecasts and strategic guidance. Their approach emphasizes rigorous
research, clear communication, localized analysis and direct forestry
experience. The analysis of timber supplies and wood demand matches the
location of wood sources to forest industry manufacturers. In the South, the
disruptive, long-term effects of the Recession have altered the supply-demand
balance of pine grade (sawtimber and chip-n-saw) supplies in our area. Grade
inventories are a combination of removals and growth on acres planted 15+
years ago. In forestry, it takes time to change the trajectory of supply
without a catastrophe.

Using Fire to Manage Hardwoods. Oil & Water?
Callie Jo Schweitzer,
is a Research Forester with
The USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station,
and is considered an expert in hardwood forest management. The hardwood
forests of Alabama "came about after tremendous disturbance and they remain
tied to disturbance, whether introduced by us, or by nature. At the turn of
the previous century, these forests were subjected to a perfect storm of
disturbances that resulted in the stand structure and species composition we
have today."

Profiting from Pine Straw
David Sherer,
owner of Sherer
Straw Supply, has been harvesting pine straw off his land since 2001. Pine
straw has been the number one landscape mulch product in the Southeast for more
than 50 years, and production of pine straw can be a good way for forest land
owners to earn income, providing an opportunity to cover some of the costs
of plantation establishment and pay for prescribed burning and other
management practices to maintain and enhance longleaf forest habitat
conditions.

Year-End Tax Planning for Landowners
Orman Wilson is a tax manager and leader of the Timber Practice Group at
Jamison Money
Farmer, PC, which is well-known for their tax expertise for forest
landowners. The end of the year means a lot to many folks. It's Christmas,
New Year's Eve, and preparing for the new year. One way landowners can
prepare is to begin their tax planning. Because there are complicated tax
laws surrounding timber, it is important for landowners to understand these
laws in order to optimize their tax situation.
