Ukraine’s Forests Turn a $167 Million Profit- From Inside a War Zone.

Meanwhile, the National Forests in the US had $135 million in Gross Revenue for sales of timber in 2025.

To make it worse, Ukraine has 23.7 million acres of forest total. There are 49 million acres of forests suitable for timber management in the US National Forests.

Georgia Forest Owners Affected by Hurricane Helene Can Now Apply for Disaster Assistance. Sign up begins March 16th.

Hurricane Helene with 100 mph winds affected 8.9 million acres of forestland in Georgia. This Block Grant is applicable only to Georgia property owners who have suffered losses due to the hurricane.

Trees influence vineyard health and ultimately wine flavor. Gretchen Boock, general manager of Benton Lane Winery in the Willamette Valley in Oregon says, “Our forest buffers us from these heat spikes, which are detrimental to the health and quality of our grapes and wine.”

Illegal logging in the mountains of western Mexico is controlled by the cartels, and state authorities stay passive or are not able to stop it. The timber industry can be attractive to the cartels as a means of diversifying their income and compensating for losses related to decreasing poppy and cannabis prices.

The Supreme Court’s ruling which invalidated the emergency tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not apply to wood-based products.

Tariffs for lumber, timber, furniture, kitchen and bath cabinets were imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, not the IEEP. The same is for the antidumping and countervailing duties imposed on softwood lumber from Canada.

Federally owned timber gets special treatment under the March 1, 2025 Executive Order to Immediately Expand American Timber Production.

USFS offers “Shared Stewardship Agreements” to implement the Order.  Idaho, Montana Utah and Wyoming are the first to sign these agreements. According to American Stewards of Liberty, “These agreements are establishing partnerships to coordinate and prioritize the USFS work at the state level and pursue implementing the right management for each community to improve forest and watershed conditions and protect communities from devastating forest fires indicative of past administrations and agency environmental policies.” Read more.

191 Forestry Organizations write a letter urging EPA to include wood as a possible source for Renewable Fuels.

Forest Landowners Association CEO Scott Jones says: “For timber producers and family forestry businesses, markets for residuals and low-value wood are often the difference between being able to actively manage their land or being forced to walk away. Modernizing the Renewable Fuel Standard would provide much-needed market certainty, strengthen rural economies, and help ensure America’s forests remain forests, even in the face of natural disasters, market disruptions, and unfair trade practices.” See letter here.

House Bill 267 Introduced on January 15th, Proposes New Criteria for Prescribed Burning.

The current law which imposed criteria to be met when obtaining a burn permit would be stricken: “In no case will the person requesting the permit allow the fire to be unattended until it is dead out.” Ala. Code 9-13-11 (d) (1).

And a new law is proposed: “The person requesting the permit may not allow the fire to be unattended until the fire is fully contained, meaning that the fire, and any burning or smoldering material from the fire, must be entirely within established or natural firebreaks.” Ala. Code 9-13-11.1 (3)[Proposed]
