Public Policy Seminar Provides Opportunity to Explore Issues Facing State Lawmakers

Tom Saunders is the General Counsel and Director of Government Affairs for the Alabama Forestry Association. He also plays a part in putting together the annual Public Policy Series, which is designed to “provide a comprehensive detailed focus on legal, legislative and regulatory issues affecting timberland owners and forest product manufacturers. At the annual event, which is hosted each January at The Grand Hotel, government officials discuss topics covering everything from land ownership and new legislation to court system updates and appropriations analyses. Though an official agenda has not been released yet for this year’s meeting, which is scheduled for January 28-30, 2024, the title is “The State of Alabama’s Governance: Improving the Quality of Life in Rural Alabama.” Thus far, more than 80 state officials have signed up to attend. Tom joins us to talk more about what can be expected from this annual event and why you should register to attend now.

Recycling vs. Virgin Fiber: What You Should Know

Dr. Paul Fowler is Executive Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He has nearly 30 years of experience working at the interface of business and academia both in the United Stated and the United Kingdom, and he has written extensively about changing dynamics in wood fiber consumption around the world, particularly with virgin fiber and the effects recycling can have on the pulp, paper, and fiber industry. He joins us to talk about the impact recovered paper and recycled fiber is having on the industry and what landowners should expect in the future.

Forest Resource Report: Growth Exceeds Harvest on Alabama's 23-Million Acre Forest

Dan Chappell is the Assistant Division Director-Forest Management for the Alabama Forestry Commission. Each year, the Alabama Forestry Commission analyzes data from numerous sources to provide a detailed and unique view of the dynamic resource that is the Alabama forest. Through painstaking and consistent work, they are able to glean significant details about which tree species are increasing, which may be declining, which are being harvested at a young age, and which are allowed to grow for a longer period of time. Dan joins us to share the need-to-know details from the 2022 Forest Resource Report and the good news that timber growth is exceeding harvest in Alabama.
