Southern Pine Beetle Situation
Alabama Forestry Commission Report
July 19, 2001

A large number of carry over spots are still active in the Northern counties. The June / July aerial flights showed that the NW region still has the majority of the SPB infestations in Alabama. There are 52 counties with SPB populations and 31 of these are Epidemic. This is an increase in Epidemic counties from the April / May Flight (27 counties in April / May). There are statewide 2,540 spots containing 462,124 infested trees. (NW region has 1,350 spots and 426,859 infested trees). The statewide problem has decreased since the April / May flight by 500 spots and 591,000 infested trees. The worst counties are Cullman, Walker, Marion, Morgan, Jefferson, Shelby, Conecuh, Winston and Franklin.

These numbers are significantly high but compared to 2000 it seems like Alabama has little problem (in July 2000 we had over 16,000 spots statewide). The stumpage value of killed trees is estimated at $34million. Landowners that had SPB in 2000 are responding quicker this year to control spots on their land. We will have one more flight (August / September) before fall coloration.

Even with these decreasing numbers the normally worst months are August and September and if the amount of rainfall decreases the rest of the summer there will be a increase in numbers of spots and infested trees. The weather so far this year is helping with adequate amounts of rainfall. If the rainfall continues the pines will be under less stress and be better able to resist SPB attacks, this will allow controls to be more productive.

The pulpwood market is still reduced, so the majority of control continues to be by the Cut and Leave method instead of salvage. If landowners can get a salvage control crew they should expect to get low stumpage prices for their pulpwood. If landowners need assistance with controls they should contact their local Alabama Forestry Commission office.
