This program is designed to offer members of the Alabama Forestry Association an opportunity to fine-tune their leadership skills and become better spokesmen for forestry in Alabama. It is aimed at getting members involved in outreach efforts to improve the public perception of the forest industry. It will also offer an opportunity for young people beginning their careers in forestry to meet and network with their peers and future leaders in the industry; people they will likely be working with for the next several decades.
Enrollment in the first class will be limited to twenty participants who are between the ages of 22 and 35. We hope to have a diverse cross section of the industry represented; landowners, industrial foresters, and members of family-owned firms (sawmills, consultants, loggers, etc.). They must be employed and have worked full time for at least one year following the completion of their education.
There will be six sessions between January 2005 and December 2005. These sessions will tentatively be held on the dates indicated on the attached schedule (this is subject to change). Each session will begin on Tuesday evening with dinner and short program session. The following day will combine lecture and field trips. The last day will be lecture/discussion and adjourn at noon. They will be held in different locations across the state to highlight different components of the forestry community. Participants will take turns leading the class in order to gain a better understanding of how to plan and organize meetings and workshops.
In addition to innovative forestry and manufacturing techniques, the class will discuss environmental and land use issues. They will also cover leadership skills such as public speaking, dealing with the media, ethics, negotiating, conflict management and other relevant topics. Political involvement will also be stressed throughout the course. Participants will be expected to attend the AFA Annual Meeting and Mid-Winter Meetings as well as participate in one of the AFA’s standing committees. The attached agenda describes the topics for each of these sessions.
Tuition for the class will be $3,000. This will include hotel rooms, meals and transportation during the six study sessions. Applications will be accepted between September 1, 2004 and October 31, 2004. Participants will be notified of acceptance to the program by December 1, 2004. The first class will begin in January 2005.
